Longridge 6 Wigton 2

Longridge First Team continued their winning form on Saturday with victory over Wigton.

Longridge were confident going into the match following their emphatic win against Timperley last week and piled the pressure on to the Wigton defence straight from the off.

It wasn’t long before Nicki Wilcox put Longridge in the lead, providing the perfect finish to some excellent build up play from the rest of the team. The away team were keen to consolidate their lead and soon found themselves 2-0 up after a sublime strike from forward Ally O’Donnell flummoxed the Wigton keeper and hit the backboard.

Longridge maintained their intensity and Nicki Wilcox scored her second of the afternoon, deflecting the ball past the keeper following some excellent attacking play from the Longridge midfield.

Although largely in control of the match, Longridge appeared to suffer a lapse in concentration nearing the end of the first half and Wigton capitalised, scoring to make the half time score 3-1.

Longridge were determined to stamp their authority on the game in the second half and came out with all guns blazing. Some excellent movement all around the pitch combined with pinpoint passing saw Longridge create a number of chances on goal.

Nicki Wilcox soon converted one of these chances and bagged herself a hat trick with a fantastic top D strike to stretch Longridge’s lead to 4-1.

Fellow forward Ally O’Donnell also added to the score sheet following a fantastic attacking run from right mid Sophie Oliver, drilling the ball into the corner of the goal and increasing Longridge’s tally to 5.

Wigton did manage to score their second goal of the match following a counter attack which caught Longridge unaware, meaning the score going into the final stages of the match was 5-2.

Not content with the scoreline as it was, a relentless Longridge continued to break down the Wigton defence with their fast build up play and quick breaks and Nicki Wilcox sealed the victory by scoring her fourth of the afternoon with a powerful strike on goal, making the final score 6-2.

Longridge will now look to make it three wins in a row as they take on Whitley Bay second team at Longridge Sports Centre on Saturday.
