A DAD from Catterall is all set to achieve his birthday goal and help boost the funds of a children’s charity by running his first marathon.

Mortgage advisor, Darren Hopkinson, who lives on Catterall Gates Lane, will line up with thousands for the 26.2 mile London Marathon on Sunday April 17 in aid of Cash for Kids.

The father-of-two is aiming to raise £1300 for the locally based charity.

Darren, 39, who has no previous running experience, felt compelled to go the distance after telling himself he would complete the challenge by the time he was 40. He will celebrate the milestone in October.

He said: “I’ve run out of years and excuses - so this year was the year to do it.

He has been training since October, gradually increasing the miles he runs each week.

He added: “The training is difficult but I’m trying to be consistent and just keep putting in the regular miles but the fundraising is just as hard.”

“There are now only six weeks left until the marathon itself so the pressure is on for training and raising sponsorship, every little helps.”
