Ten schools took part in contest that showcased local youngsters’ talents

Young table tennis players descended on Garstang Community Academy for an inter-schools competition.

In total 10 district schools entered pupils with 40 competitors playing matches in the group contest.

The participants were all given some pre-competition training with coaches from Garstang Table Tennis Club followed by practice matches to perfect their serve and scoring technique.

The competition was split into five groups with four players from each school divided to make two teams.

Each school team played a two-a-side challenge against every school in the group.

In group one Garstang Community Primary ‘A’ and St Michael’s on Wyre Primary ‘B’ were tied on 10 wins each. Community Primary ‘A’ emerged triumphant with 44 points to St Michael’s 38 points.

Garstang Community Primary proved double-winners with the ‘B’ team also topping group two with nine wins.

St Thomas CE Primary School were overall victors in group four with 41 points after drawing on nine wins with Nateby School girls team.

And winners of group five were Scorton CE Primary School ‘B’, who tied on 10 wins with Cockerham CE Primary ‘A’ but also picked up 41 points.

The closest of all the groups was group three with four schools drawing level.

Cockerham ‘B’, St Thomas’ ‘B’, Winmarleigh ‘B’ and Bleasdale ‘B’ ended up tied on six wins each.

The result having to go on total points scored for the entire group.

Coach Graham Coupe said: “After some heated calculations and rechecking Winmarleigh emerged triumphant with 126 points in total narrowly defeating Cockerham who has 123 points.

“The day finished with presentation of the trophies and certificates for everyone who took part, I hope everybody enjoyed the day.”

Garstang Table Tennis Club run coaching sessions for primary school children on Monday evenings from 4.30pm till 5.30pm, the sessions re-commence after Christmas on Monday January 6.
