Garstang 2nd played their last ‘snow postponed’ game of the season against Preston 3rd XI at Cottam on Saturday.
Garstang made a confident start winning the first of eight penalty corners (PCs) after only five minutes.
Lauran Whiteside made an excellent start up front. Indeed the four Garstang young players including Lauran (15), Ellie Harrison (15), Jemmima Dewhurst (16) and Nicky Charter (17) all showed a new power, maturity and positioning sense that bodes well for next season.
After 10 minutes Garstang won their 2nd PC and a high shot went in the net – off Jess Reid’s foot.
It took Preston 22 minutes to get in the Garstang ‘D’ and the defence team of Jemma Hampson, Vicky Bradley, Gemma Livesey and Jess Reid had to clear the ball.
Garstang won a PC after 24 minutes and Jess Reid put a sweet second shot home to open the scoring.
In the second half Garstang pressure was met by a brave Preston defence led in ability by a certain young Emma Smith in midfield who even had the temerity to win the ball off her mother Eileen playing for Garstang!
Garstang won an early PC and then another in short order after three minutes.
After an initial block by the Preston keeper Ellie fed a neat pass to Liz in front of goal.
Garstang rotated players and Nicola Rogerson came on for the first time.
Some minutes later Preston made a break and Garstang keeper and captain Megan Ditchfield met the ball at the top of the ‘D’ for her only kick of the game.
Julie Nightingale had to come off with cramp after a first class game.
After 27 minutes the Garstang pressure at last told and Nicky Charter, fed the ball by Nicola Rogerson, fulfilled her promise with a goal across the Preston keeper from the left.
This was a great end of season performance by Garstang.
