Longridge Ladies 1st Team 2
Kendal Ladies 1st team 3
Longridge suffered a disappointing defeat to Kendal on Saturday in a frustrating match which finished 3-2.
On a bitterly cold afternoon at Longridge Sports Centre, it was Kendal who had the stronger start as they overpowered the home side and played the ball confidently around the pitch. It wasn’t long before they managed to penetrate the Longridge defence to score first.
Kendal maintained their pressure on Longridge and just minutes later, they went 2-0 up following a well executed short corner routine. However, the two goal deficit appeared to kick start Longridge into action and they created a number of opportunities on goal and were unlucky not to score.
Longridge were determined to start the second half on the front foot and played some more encouraging hockey. Once again, they were presented with a number of chances in front of goal and were unlucky not to capitalise. It was in fact Kendal who went on to score first in the second half, against the run of play.
Undeterred, Longridge carried on battling and a quick break saw Longridge finally convert one of their many chances, as Nicki Wilcox slotted the ball past the Kendal keeper to narrow the away side’s lead to 3-1.
Having finally found the back of the goal, Longridge continued to put together some excellent passing sequences and went on to win a short corner. Jenny Key struck the ball from the top of the D, and it was Sophie Oliver who got on the end of the rebound to make the score 3-2.
With just minutes to go until the final whistle, Longridge had a last minute equaliser firmly within their sights. The whole team stepped up in an attempt to overwhelm the Kendal defence and they were unfortunate not to come away with a draw.
Longridge’s shaky start cost them dearly and the game finished 3-2. They must learn from their mistakes when they travel to Sheffield to take on Sheffield Hallam Ladies 1st team on Saturday.
