Despite the continuing economic gloom the Stonyhurst Park Golf Club Charity Weekend again raised a record amount of money.

It has once again been able to support three local charities, Jigsaw, the Bowland and Pennine Mountain Rescue Team and Ward 2a Neurological Ward, Royal Preston Hospital, each receiving a cheque for £2,000.

The charity weekend started on May 17 with a Corporate Golf Day.

This event has been running for several years and has raised in excess of £80,000, averaging £6,000 per year, which is then distributed to three local charities, each of which receives sponsorship for three years.

Twenty-seven teams of four entered this year and huge thanks go to the many local companies and individuals who supported the event by means of cash donations, sponsoring of tees, entering teams or doing those hundreds of backstage jobs which make an event such a success.

A special mention is due to Home Gas Supplies, Blackburn, which once again brought along many teams for the Corporate Day.

With the sale of raffle tickets and a great response to the auction at the presentation evening held at the Shireburn Hotel, Hurst Green, the total raised exceeded all expectations.

Thanks also to charity committee members, club members and all those involved.

The winning team on Corporate Day was Team NOBH, comprising of J. Carrington R. Ormerod, G. Dooley and R. Dooley. Second, third and fourth places were all on a tie-break and awarded to Jim Walker Transport, Kingspan and Weltonhurst respectively.

During the presentation evening, the winners of the two main club competitions held over the charity weekend, were awarded their trophies.

The chairman’s chalice went to Mike Kerrigan and the ladies’ rosebowl was won by Jan Walker.
