Longridge Golf Club’s Mark Young capped a truly amazing season of personal golf triumphs this weekend when he secured the 2012 Srixon Northern Order of Merit title.
Playing in tournaments throughout the season against top amateurs from the North of England, Mark, who is also the Lancashire county golf champion, competed in the Pines Trophy at Hillside GC, near Southport, needing a better finish than Sean Doherty of Bury, who led the order of merit going into the event.
In a nail-biting finale, Young finished in third place in the Pines Trophy with a score of 73, birding three of the last nine holes, while Doherty finished down the field and out of the order of merit points.
This left Mark with a season’s grand total of 1,470 points, 20 points clear of his county team-mate Sean Doherty, giving him his fourth Srixon Northern Order of Merit title in the past six years.
To cap off a great golfing season, the club are also celebrating further honours after the seniors secured the North West Seniors League title.
Team captain Jim Clegg used 22 members of the club’s seniors section to play the 12 matches with a six pairs format throughout the summer. Having completed their fixtures, amassing a total of 88 points, celebrations were on hold awaiting the result of a re-arranged final match. However, Hurlstone Hall failed to collect sufficient points, and had to be content with the runners-up spot, six points behind Longridge, who repeated their previous title success of 2001.
