Myerscough College Junior’s Under 15’s Reds have won the Lancashire Cup with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Blackburn side Mill Hill at The County Ground, Leyland.
Coach Mike O’Neill was delighted with the result saying: “In 20 years of watching, playing and coaching football I have never seen or participated in a better game of football.
“Anyone who paid on the gate certainly got their money’s worth! Seven goals in total, five screamers and countless last ditch tackles, fantastic saves and heroic interceptions.
“Although the score line separates the teams, in terms of ability, attitude, commitment and performance Myerscough and Mill Hill were extremely well matched. On the night every Myerscough player played a part and worked exceptionally hard for the victory.’’
In all cup final victories there’s a hero and tonight’s was Joe “Nobby” Noblett, who bagged a first half hat trick to pull Myerscough from a goal down to 3-1.
Mike added: “I know it’s easy to heap praise on your opponents when you’ve won but Mill Hill were pure quality going forward and on another occasion could have won the game. But it wasn’t to be and Myerscough defended bravely whilst conceding two second half goals, one of which was an unstoppable header from a right wing cross from a very talented player who ran our left flank into the ground all night long.’’
The game finished 4-3 after another unbelievable smash from Dion Charles who showed his quality at a crucial moment.
Full time was a mix of emotions as the Myerscough players were all overcome with sheer joy, but they still had time to go over to congratulate their defeated opponents for a fantastic game of football.
Scott Maclean had the honour of lifting the first ever Lancashire cup trophy for Myerscough College JFDC in front of around 150 friends and family members to great cheers and applause.
Mike said: “We’d especially like to thank Adamson Ross Ltd for sponsoring the team and supplying a special away kit for the night’s game. Particular thanks also to the Lancashire FA who put on a great final with fantastic facilities and providing officials who made the players feel like a million dollars.
“At long last Myerscough College JFDC can proudly and confidently say we are one of the best Junior Football Clubs in Lancashire with a cup winning team!’’
