In-form Oly Pye led Longridge’s second string to a nine run victory over Eccleston as they maintained their push for the Palace Shield Division One title with a close victory.

Openers Pye and Lambert got off to a steady start reaching 39 before Lambert was bowled for 19 and after several partnerships Pye finally fell for a well made 65 and Longridge managed to scramble to 161 for seven.

After tea Longridge made a great start as Lewis took a wicket with his first ball.

He followed this by bowling the next man in the following over and Longridge were on top as Eccleston scored just 24 runs in the first 15 overs. Eccleston were reduced to 67 for six off 30 overs but Longridge took their foot off the gas and suddenly found themselves in trouble when Eccleston needed only 50 runs to win with nine overs left.

When Lewis bowled out Speak for 22 with 40 still needed Longridge looked favourites but this just spurred Wilkinson on and when he reached 50 Eccleston needed only 20 from 18 balls.

Wilkinson was tempted to charge down the track and when he missed the ball he could only look on as his stumps were hit for a gutsy 59. From there Longridge easily closed the over out to win by nine runs as Eccleston finished their innings on 152 for nine.
