Stoppage time cup heartbreak for Garstang

Garstang 2, Dalton Utd 3

GARSTANG succumbed to a stoppage time winner to exit the Lancashire Amateur Shield in the first round.

The Garstang team had been further weakened by the unavailability of Preston, an injury to West and the departure of Lewis to his former club, Squires Gate.

Jones gave Dalton the lead after 10 minutes when he caught the home defence square before drilling the ball past Howell.

Poole brought a good save out of the visiting keeper before Kelsall, making his first team debut, put his team level with a well taken goal in the 15th minute.

Howell had to be at his best to save from Jones then Platt wasted a good opportunity when he screwed his shot wide in a 10 minute spell of Dalton dominance.

Played in torrential rain both sides could be congratulated for providing an entertaining spectacle.

A well worked Garstang corner by Bryson saw Squirrell shooting narrowly wide in the 55th minute then Dalton keeper, Pritchard did well when he palmed away a good cross from Edmonds.

Garstang were rewarded for their efforts in the 75th minute. Kelsall was brought down on the edge of the box. Bryson stepped up to place the resulting free kick neatly into the bottom corner of the net but sadly Garstang couldn’t hold on to their lead.

With only eight minutes to go, Alexandra got round the back of the Garstang defence before crossing for Butler to head home but worse was to come when in injury time Butler, again rose high to head home a cross from, this time, Prosser.

Platt for Dalton and Squirrell for Garstang both received yellow cards for a dispute late in the game.

Manager Thomas will need to shuffle his pack once again to achieve a much needed win at home against Fleetwood Hesketh on Saturday.
