Field day queen crowning was a real ‘Sister Act’

Waiting for Video...

Cockerham’s 61st field day was a soaraway success, helped by beautiful weather and a fabulous selection of floats.

The parade had “movies” as the theme and local youngsters and toddlers, including pupils from Cockerham Primary School, Toddlers Stay and Play group and the Brownies, dressed up in style.

When it came to the crowning of the queen it was a real “Sister Act”, as field day secretary Lorraine Lozzer explained: “Isabella Lawson, the new rose queen, and Jenny Lawson, the retiring queen, are sisters and live on their family farm with mum, dad and brother in Cockerham.”

Isabella, who is in Year 5 at Cockerham Primary School, was joined by a retinue comprising of Alexandra Glen, Madison Sewell, Bethany Gould, Dexta Hodkinson, Mitchell Crouch and Tobias Sutcliffe.

Sadly, two of the retinue, Eleanor and Alastair Howard, were unable to attend due to illness, but are now looking forward to accompanying
Isabella to other local field day processions.

She was crowned by Caroline Lawson, joint president with her husband, Stuart, this year.

Visitors to the event enjoyed music by Standish and Coppull Brass Band and enjoyed activities on the field, ranging from face painting to maypole dancing and swing boats.

Despite the sunshine it proved to be a soaking day for Class 2 teacher Mr James Ingham who was a willing victim as pupils lined up to dunk their teacher on the ducking stool.

The day concluded with a barbecue and family disco.

A cheque for £250 was presented by the field day organisers to local charity Treatment For Thomas.
