The demise of the Longridge Lions group at the end of last year means its popular Christmas Bazaar will no longer take place.

The bazaar, which started after the group was formed in 1972, attracted many local charities and organisations to book stalls as fundraisers at the seasonal event in the Civic Hall.

Even though we tried to recruit new Lions members over the last 15 years, it proved difficult to get people interested in joining unfortunately – a sign of the times

Treasurer for several years until it closed, David Jepson, said: “The stallholders filled the hall and must have raised lots of money for their causes over the years when we had a full complement of Lions members.

“It continued to be successful but, even though we tried to recruit new Lions members over the last 15 years, it proved difficult to get people interested in joining unfortunately – a sign of the times.

“When it was just down to Stuart Tyrer, Alan Coupe and myself, Longridge Lions was eventually disbanded.”

Mr Jepson first joined the Lions when he lived in Grange-over-Sands, joining the Longridge group in 1987 when he moved to Ribchester.

He added: “We had great help from Heywood Lions who were very supportive in the last few years when half a dozen helped at the bazaars, and we want to give a big thank you to all the stallholders and the people of Longridge who supported us over the years.”

One feature of the bazaars, as well as such attractions as the Human Fruit Machine and the bacon butties, was choosing the next year’s Field Day Queen by pulling her name out of a hat.

So this year, the Field Day team has to find another route and they reveal that plans for this are already being discussed and will be made known soon.
