Guys Thatched Hamlet celebrated its 23rd annual oyster festival last weekend and organisers revealed a staggering 14 tonnes of oysters have been consumed since its first event.

The popular family run venue, in Bilsborrow, poured 10,000 pints of Guinness and sold more than 6,000 oysters to its entourage of guests some of whom had come from as far as Canada to join in the Irish fun.

Owner of Guys Thatched Hamlet Sean Wilkinson said: “The oyster festival was only a small event when it started out with about 150 people but last weekend we saw between 5,000 and 6,000 people.

“We hold the largest oyster festival in the north of England and try and put a better twist on things every year to make it more interesting for people.

“There is quite a few charities that benefit from our events each year and when proceeds are going to charity I think people are prepared to pay and spend more to help out.”
