My wife and I made a visit to the New Holly at Forton. Upon arrival we were pleasantly surprised by the changes to the décor and were immediately greeted by Rachelle and shown to our table.
Our drinks order was swiftly taken and the menus explained.
It was pleasing to see that a lot of the produce was sourced from local suppliers and highlighted in the dishes descriptions.
We chose the soup and a delicious soufflé and were served complimentary warm bread whilst awaiting our starters.
These arrived piping hot and beautifully presented. The soup had a subtle hint of spice, which complimented the tomato and red pepper, and the soufflé was light and packed full of flavour.
For the main course, I chose the chicken Kiev and my wife chose the mushroom stroganoff.
Again they came beautifully presented, both being given the BVI “twist”.
The moist chicken was covered in a herb and Parmesan crust and stuffed with cheese. It was served with beautifully cooked leeks, cabbage, and courgettes, chunky chips and a creamy white wine and smoked bacon reduction.
The stroganoff consisted of mushrooms in a light sour cream and brandy sauce with braised rice, but my better half was pleased at being given the option of half rice and half chips.
Following our mains, we were presented with the dessert menu, but unfortunately after polishing off the previous two courses I was the only one left with enough room to squeeze in dessert.
I chose a lovely warm slab of homemade chocolate brownie served with a delicious chocolate and orange sauce and vanilla ice cream.
It is clear the staff have been well trained as we were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. We are already planning our next visit to this fantastic local gem.
