Northern Broadsides return to The Dukes in Lancaster next month March with a new play written to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War.

An August Bank Holiday Lark – at the theatre March 4-8 – takes its title from a line in Philip Larkin’s poem MCMXIV and explores the impact of the war on rural Lancashire.

Set in the summer of 1914, all in a small village are excited about Wakes week and a rest from from field and mill. The looming war barely registers...

An August Bank Holiday Lark is directed by and will star Northern Broadsides Artistic Director Barrie Rutter, right, one of the most respected theatrical figures of his generation.

Among the cast are some whose grandfathers and great grandfathers fought in the war.

Tickets for An August Bank Holiday Lark are £8-£18.50 (concs £2 off) plus £1 per ticket online booking fee.
