Crazy for you

Maghull Musical Theatre Company

Southport Little Theatre

It was a triumphant night for Maghull Musical Theatre Comapany at Southport’s Little Theatre with their production of ‘Crazy For You’, directed by Betty Hall.

With a huge cast, colourful costumes and a feel-good story, it was everything you could wish for in a musical with the added bonus of some of Gershwin’s finest songs.

Bearing a remarkable resemblance to Forties film star, Clark Gable, Matthew Casson played Bobby Child who is sent to shut down a ramshackle theatre in a desert shanty town but ends up trying to revive it by putting on a show featuring the local cowboys, while, at the same time, falling in love with the owner’s daughter, Polly (Kate McHenry).

Bobby pretends he is theatre impresario, Bella Zangler, but the real Zangler turns up ( Les Gomersall with his usual accomplished comic portrayal) and Bobby is exposed.

Defeated, he slinks back to New York but all ends well as their show is a success and the lovers are reunited.

Gaynor Hale was responsible for the fine dancing and the excellent 11-piece band was directed by Nick Montague. After modern shows like ‘Boogie Nights’ and ‘Jersey Boys’, the music and setting of ‘Crazy for You’ seems quaintly old fashioned but the music of Gershwin still has a pull on the heartstrings, Kate McHenry’s ‘But Not For Me’was sublime, and the applause at the end confirmed yet another success for the company.
