The 24-year-old from Kirkham had ripped up a penalty notice and stated he wouldn’t be paying a penny.

A man who lives in a converted pub called the Railway Inn has been slapped with a hefty fine after angrily refusing to pay for a train ticket. Jayden Grist was stopped by a conductor on the Kirkham to St Annes line and asked to produce his ticket.

Preston Magistrates’ Court was told the 24-year-old had failed to pay his £5.50 fare and provided incorrect details when challenged. However, when he was issued with a penalty fare notice for £20, he ripped up the order and said he would not pay anything, the court heard.

Ironically, Grist lives in a former pub called the Railway Inn in Kirkham, which was turned into flats when the old boozer shut. Several reminder letters were sent to that address but he failed to respond and his case was taken to court, where he was found guilty.

He was fined £220 and ordered to pay £80 victim surcharge and £150 court costs. He must also pay the £5.50 fee for the original train journey.
