A Preston man who assaulted police officers on duty has had a 15 week prison term suspended for 12 months and has been ordered to carry out unpaid work for 150 hours.

At a sitting of Preston Magistrates, the court was told that on August 14, 2021, Carl Atkinson, 37, of Central Drive, Penwortham, assaulted emergency workers PC Smith and PC Chaudhury by beating them. Originally pleading not guilty to the charges brought before him, Atkinson, who was held in custody, changed his plea to guilty which was taken into account when imposing a sentence. His jail sentence had been suspended as he is now a father and the impact immediate incarceration would have on family.
