A first for the city’s arts

The city’s monthly celebration of culture also sees the public launch of Lancaster District Arts Strategy in the city’s Market Square – a free event shows how important the arts are to the district and sets out how they might develop.

First Fridays, which have run since October, show off how the area’s cultural organisations and venues.

This time, there’s music from Bones and The Aft at the Yorkshire House from 8pm (tickets £2); Thunder Jackson and the Contraband at Stonewell Tavern from 9.30pm (free); Forrest Hills opens its Jazz Mansion again from 8pm (tickets £15); and This Time Next Week play with other local young acoustic artists for free in The Dukes gallery.

In Morecambe and Heysham, there’s two free gigs both at 9pm: Slither at The Bath Hotel and Juke Box Heroes at The Old Hall.

Also in Morecambe, you can revisit the heyday of seaside entertainment with the Best of British Variety show at The Platform from 7.30pm (tickets £11-£13).

A free exhibition opens in Lancaster Library by local artist Simon Janes and Lancaster and District Art Society’s free 
exhibition continues at The 
Storey Institute.

Pop Up Dance comes courtesy of Ludus Dance. People of all ages and abilities can just turn up at their King Street base at 6.45pm to develop moves before venturing out in groups to perform in the city’s outdoor spaces.

Alternatively there’s Pub Culture at The Lord Ashton from 7.30pm (free) or The Dukes continuing outdoor production of Robin Hood in Williamson Park (Tickets £7-£14). Details: www.artscity.co.uk.
