Picture of industrial decline

The renovation of a 19th century mill in the North of the county has inspired an exhibition at The Dukes gallery in Lancaster throughout March.

Halton Mill: Lech Series is a collection of abstract digital prints by Catriona Stamp who has a studio in the renovated mill and lives at Forgebank Cohousing nearby.

The images, based on photographs taken before the renovation, show patterns produced by wear and tear on the interior of the once abandoned, neglected building.

Stamp’s work is often based on explorations of particular sites.

Halton Mill became an engineering works in the 1950s, when Luneside Engineering Company (Halton) or LECH was started by Polish refugee Col. Benirsky.

The mill had been empty since the late 1990s prior to refurbishment in 2013.

Catriona was drawn to traces of the former workplace, and set out to record textures produced by flaking paint, worn tiles, rust stains, the play of light through textured glass windows.

The exhibition runs from March 2-29 and can be viewed in the gallery during normal Dukes opening hours.
