They say Thailand is the Land of Smiles. Well then I can pronounce the Thai Royal as the Cafe of Smiles.

Tucked away in Preston’s Takeaway Quarter it claims to bring Thai street food to Preston.

Having been to the Far East, it’s the real deal.

Welcoming us with a “Sa-wat-dee Kah” the delightful lady led us through the menu.

There’s two sizes but I went for medium, pointing at my workmate’s waistline and exclaiming: “Pom poi.”

She understood.

The fish cakes, made of minced fish, shrimps and long bean blended with a red curry paste, were a bit too reformed plasticy for me but damn tasty.

And the duck Pad Thai – with noodles, bean sprouts, onions, ground peanuts and eggs – was a delight on the tongue long after I’d passed half of it over to a colleague, having failed to polish off a small portion!

Ah the portion. The street style cartons for the noodles offer a Magic Porridge Pot experience for the hungry customer.

They may appear small but my colleague was starting to feel a bit full halfway through his Pad Num Mun Gha (egg noodles with fresh vegetables), which came with a mix of beef, chicken and king prawns.

Plenty of everything in the mix up with sesame oil and soya sauce adding to the richness. Very nice. Or maybe the full tummy was something to do with the tray of Poh Pia Tod (Thai spring rolls) .

Fresh from the fryer, they were hot and crispy with a good mix of chicken, vermicelli and vegetables wrapped in thin pastry.

There are plenty of great takeaways on Friargate and the Thai Royal can hold its own on food and friendliness.

Khop khun mâak, as theysay in Bangkok.
