The show, at Preston Playhouse, on Market Street West on Wednesday-Saturday, March 5-8, is about a magical love potion which goes horribly wrong.

It was first performed in London on November 1877. The first full-length work of the Gilbert & Sullivan partnership, it is a satire on social conventions.

Preston G&S Society says: “It was first performed in Preston in 1983 then again in 1998 and 2007. Styles do change over time and our productions are no different.

“In 83 it was in the more conventional Victorian setting, in ‘98 that vision was repeated, in ‘07 we set the piece in the 1940s. This time time, in a tenuous link to our 60 Glorious Years, we are celebrating the 1960s.

“Maybe next time around it could be the 1980s with goths against punks.”

Tickets £10. See www.prestongass.co.uk.
