Shakespeare’s Lanky comedy

Following on from productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth, Twelfth Night will be the fourth Bolton Octagon production to be directed by Olivier Award-winning artistic director David Thacker.

Many scholars believe Shakespeare spent time in Lancashire, staying at both Hoghton Tower and Knowsley Hall during his formative years.

These regional links have provided the inspiration for this production – a Lancashire comedy that explores the ‘upstairs, downstairs’ world of drunks in the kitchen, feisty in-between maids, foolish aristocrats, irreverent comics, lovesick young men and ladies in love. Ten actors performing in Twelfth Night have been through-cast from the current production of Hobson’s Choice, a choice that David Thacker made when he first decided to pair these two plays.

Thacker commented: “Hobson’s Choice and Twelfth Night are two Lancashire-based productions, both are comedies with romantic plot lines – two very appealing plays!”

Taking on the role of Malvolio is Christopher Villiers who picked up the award for Best Supporting Actor, at the 2012 Manchester Theatre Awards for his role in Winslow Boy. Box office: 01204 520661 or www.octagonbolton.co.uk.
