Two’s Company in Jim Cartwright’s pub drama

The creator of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice will see his gripping two-handed drama running at Chorley Little  Theatre from today unitl  Saturday.

Produced by Chorley Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society, the production is a tour-de-force by two of the society’s stalwarts, Steve Unsworth and Sarah Burrill.

They who take on the hugely taxing roles of the pub’s landlord and landlady of the Northern working class pub where the drama is set, played on UK tour last year by comic and Phoenix Nights star Justin Moorhouse and Victoria Elliott.

But their roles don’t stop there as the couple also portray the pub’s regulars – playing an amazing 14 different characters throughout the course of the action.

Guided by award winning director Sean Duxbury, the two actors take their audience through an entire gamut of emotions, laughter, tears, love and heartbreak, in a single evening out, as the pub is revealed as a place of failed aspirations and unachieved dreams.

We meet all the characters which inhabit the pub, including the failed Romeo, the old regulars, the loving couple, the drunken mistress, the jukebox bully and many more instantly recogniseable types.

And, as the play reaches its conclusion, we finally discover just what it is that keeps the landlord and his wife together through the years.

For this production, which is sponsored by JW Lees Brewery, the company have transformed the theatre, with pub games and a jukebox in the bar and even a prize pub quiz after the show. Do come and join us for a cracking night out.

The play is on this year’s GCSE syllabus and is an accepted classic from the pen of the Lancashire born author who has made his home in Chorley for many years.

Tickets are £6 for Monday to Wednesday performances and £8 for shows from Thursday to the closing night on Saturday. Schools tickets are just £5, available for Monday to Thursday performances, with a buy 10, get the 11th free deal.
