Variety is the spice of life – and it’s back

Many of you will remember variety shows that ran at the theatres in Preston up until the 1950s and then on the television until the 1980s.

The show is being produced by Jeff Brailsford, an expert in music hall theatre who successfully produced a similar event last October, which attracted an audience of more than 400.

The evening will have a very traditional feel and focuses on songs, dance and comedy

The show features a range of performing acts, including the Preston Musical Comedy Show Choir, led by Musical Director Bruce McLaren; Preston’s College Performing Arts students who put on the musical Godspel in March this year at the Playhouse, and The Playhouse Players, a group of local amateur actors and actresses many of whom have graced the stage many times over recent years.

The Playhouse is the longest running theatre in Preston.

The building was constructed in 1847 as a Friends Meeting House, later used as a dance hall and, after military use during the Second World War, was converted into a theatre opening in October, 1949.

It is run purely by volunteers who are passionate about live theatre and want to sustain and improve the Playhouse for generations to come. Therefore all the proceeds from this fantastic event will go towards making it a more comfortable place for audiences.

The ‘Variety 2014’ event is running for two nights only Friday-Saturday, June 6-7

Curtains: 7.30pm.

Tickets: £8 and £7 for senior citizens and students.
