Emelia Birchall, of Garstang High School, was one of a number of young artists from across the North West invited to exhibit their work at Blackpool Sixth Form College’s Young at Art competition.

The exhibition, which also included a fashion show, featured a wide array of artwork from fine art, textiles, fashion, to graphic design and photography.

Year 11 pupil Emilia’s piece, a corset design, was inspired by the feminine and intricate works of artist Jenni Dutton, and the exquisite corset received praise from art lovers, impressed with her attention to detail.

The said: “I enjoyed making my corset even though I was under pressure, as it was a 10 hour exam! I chose the theme ‘The Everyday’ and wanted to represent how we are all beautiful inside and how appearances should not matter.”

Emilia’s success topped a year of firsts for the art department at Garstang High School, headed by a new team Mr Jamie Colluney and Mrs Sue Norris.

They have helped develop and showcase talented pupils through their links with many higher education colleges.

Pupils have attended a number of activities, most recently a photography workshop at Blackpool Sixth Form College.

Laura Fiddes, graphic design and fashion tutor at Blackpool Sixth Form College said: “The Young at Art exhibition provides a platform for students to showcase their artistic and creative talents.

“It gives them a real confidence boost and a taste of what it will be like in their future careers.

“The exhibition was the busiest its been and the artwork on display was breathtaking.”

“I am really pleased for all the students that took part.

“Being involved in the exhibition provides essential experience which is needed for university and employment within the industry.”
