LOCAL people are being invited to join the experts and discover the delights and secrets of a beautiful area on our doorstep.

The Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty organisation has launched its Festival Bowland programme with a new series of events lined up for people to learn more about the wildlife, culture and landscape of the area.

AONB partners are working together with landowners, local experts and businesses to provide a wealth of events and opportunities for people to explore the area’s special qualities and to share with others what makes this area such a special place for both people and wildlife.

The year round calendar of events includes walking, cycling, wildlife watching and photography event – plus such activities as drystone walling, spoon carving and poetry.

From June there will be open studios, workshops and exhibitions – and the chance to sing and dance.

The 2012 programme also sees the introduction of two new features designed to help residents and visitors explore and enjoy even more.

The “Discover Bowland” events will take a more in-depth look at a range of subjects, all guided by leaders who are experts in their field.

While a new heritage weekend, on September 7-9, will offer a chance to look behind the scenes at some of the AONB’s less familiar places.
