They were out in force on Longridge Field Day - horsemen, charioteers, legions and footsoldiers in glittering arrays of silver, blue and red chain mail, led by their conquering chieftan and his white horse.

It didn’t matter that their mounts had wheels, or they were shod in leather - or that their chief’s horse had a head of bold white card - they were the bold Romans from Barnacre Road! And they won the day and the battle of the floats and walking tableaux by carrying off the Alan Riding rosebowl. It’s the event’s top prize in the category, and other winners were the wonderful Noah’s Ark by St Wilfrid’s RC primary school and the amazingly colourful circus by the CE Primary School.
