New £2m leisure complex to open
The family owners of a long-established residential park are set to open the doors on a new £2 million leisure complex and health club on Garstang’s doorstep.
Well-known businessman Mike Ward will unveil his latest venture, Acresfield Health Club and Spa , based next door to Wyre Vale Park on the A6 at Cabus, to the public for the first time this weekend.
The ambitious project has been a number of years in the planning and will see a boost to the local economy with 20 new jobs created.
Staff welcomed former swimmer Steve Parry, a British Olympic medallist, to visit Garstang for a tour of the facility ahead of the official opening on June 1.
Mr Ward said: “Steve was keen to visit Acresfield to view at first hand progress with the building of the new health club and spa. He not only commented on the quality of the build, but was impressed with the diversity of facilities which will be on offer.
“It is a great feeling when an elite athlete such as Steve is impressed with the standard of the facilities which will be available.
“The building is progressing well towards completion and will open the beginning of June.”
Mr Ward added there had been a growing interest in the health club which, as well as a new pool, will give leisure-users the opportunity for use of a state-of-the-art gym, dance studio and multi-purpose sports hall, spa and beauty experiences.
The eco-friendly complex has been discussed for several years, being part of the long term plans for development at Acresfield/Wyre Vale. Acresfield spokesman Jamie Diggin said it was an ‘exciting and exclusive opportunity’ for the community.
He said: “There is nothing else quite like it in the local area - all the facilities are top spec and we are looking to bring as many services, classes, therapies as we can. We’ve been updating people all the way through the build of our progress and the feedback has been great.” The team are offering members of the public tours of the new facility with during an open this weekend Saturday and Sunday May 17-18 from 10am until 4pm.
The first viewing of Acresfield Health Club come as Ben Whittingham of Garstang Labour Group called on Wyre Council to reveal their plans for investment in Garstang’s leisure facilities.
Despite a pledge of a £300,000 cash injection for the Windsor Road YMCA Leisure Centre, the council is yet to announce further details on what will be involved.
Mr Whittingham said: “How long will the people of Garstang and district need to wait for the Wyre Borough Conservatives to explain why they feel we deserve less than our fair share - or are they happy for Garstang to be the black sheep?”
