Bad weather causes spate of early morning accidents

Police warned rush hour drivers to slow down as bad weather caused a spate of accidents on the motorway network today.

Officers attended up to nine collisions in the region before breakfast-time as heavy rain made conditions treacherous.

A vehicles was on its side on the northbound carriageway of the M61 between Chorley and the Macron Stadium near Bolton, causing long tailbacks, while another was reported to have careered off the motorway and up an embankment in the same area.

A vehicle was blocking the northbound carriageway of the M6 just south of the Charnock Richard service station after hitting the central reservation.

And police reported debris on the northbound carriageway of the M61 near to junction 6.

A spokesperson for the North West Motorway Police said the weather was causing problems and urged drivers to “please alter your driving accordingly and slow down.”
