A father and son duo are promising to fry up a tasty supper after opening a new fish and chip shop.
John and Jonathan Leech are the brains behind Garstang Fish & Chips at Unit 2, Stoops Weind, Garstang.
The traditional restaurant and takeaway is the family’s first in the North West - and it is the first with Jonathan, 23, at the helm.
John Leech, 49, originally from Fulwood and an ex-Fulwood High School student, has run his own fish and chip shop in Cornwall for more than 25 years, along with a coffee shop and ice cream parlour.
Jonathan, who lives in Garstang with his wife Hannah, 21, said: “I got married last summer to Hannah, a local girl from Thornton. We decided we wanted to live in the North West and moved to Garstang.
“I needed a business nearby and the Weind is a very busy thoroughfare. The old building was a bit of an eyesore, so we saw a nice opportunity to turn something bad into something good, and have a nice asset for the town.”
The building, which was previously a preparation unit for a butchers, was taken from private landlords, with Robert Pinkus & Co. acting on behalf of the landlord.
It has been transformed into a 1,216 sq ft restaurant, which will seat 40 covers and will open from Monday to Saturday from 11.30am to 9pm.
Jonathan said: “We are delighted to be opening in such a bustling and vibrant market town. The property is an ideal location for us and the fit out has been a labour of love the last few months.
“We hope the local residents like what we have done with the restaurant and we are looking forward to serving our fish and chip suppers to the people of Garstang.
“The first time I was working in a chip shop I think I was about seven, peeling spuds for dad. It’s come full circle - I get him to peel my spuds now!”
The business was opened at lunchtime yesterday.
Jonathan said: “We do everything traditional you would expect - the only thing different is in our sit-down restaurant we have some very nice desserts, cakes from Lathams of Broughton and Bonds of Elswick ice cream, which is a bit of a step up from most chip shops.
“We will also have a nice espresso machine, doing freshly ground coffees.”
