Chorley and Leyland police chase sees driver of stolen Peugeot caught with stinger outside Tesco Express

A frantic police chase saw hair-raising near-misses as the reckless driver of a stolen car put lives at risk today.

A young man was arrested after a high speed police chase through Chorley and Leyland this afternoon (Thursday, January 11).

Unmarked police cars led the chase as a fleet of police pursued a stolen Peugeot 308 for miles before forcing the driver to a stop using a stinger outside Tesco Express in Turpin Green Lane in Leyland.

Some drivers were hit by the reckless driver of the stolen car while others reported hair-raising near-misses as police frantically pursued the out-of-control Peugeot at high-speed.

The frenzied chase ended with the driver encircled by the undercover Tac Ops squad as a young man was dragged out of the burnt orange Peugeot and placed in handcuffs.

A white Transit van was damaged at the scene of the capture, but no one appeared injured in the commotion which left a bumper and bits of debris scattered across the road.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and burglary. He was led into the back of a police van while officers diverted traffic down Bent Lane, leading to delays around the town during rush hour.

Two other boys, aged 16 and 17, and a 19-old man were later arrested on suspicion of burglary and taken into custody.

Police statement

A police spokesperson said: "We received a report of some fuel being stolen from a petrol station in Clayton Le Woods, Chorley at around 2pm.

"The car thought to be involved was also reported as stolen, in a separate incident. Our officers identified the car, a Peugeot 308, and signalled for it to stop.

"The car made off, leading our officers on a pursuit through Chorley and into Leyland, where it was brought to a stop on Turpin Green Lane.

"Throughout the pursuit, the Peugeot 308 collided with a number of vehicles, including police vehicles. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

"Leyland Way was closed for a short amount of time but has since re-opened.

"A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and dangerous driving.

"A 19-year-old man, and two teenage boys, age 17 and 16 have all been arrested on suspicion of burglary. They remain in custody.
