Drive to recruit fire staff

Would-be firefighers are invited to attend a special open evening at Garstang Fire Station on Wednesday, February 20, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm.

The service is seeking to recruit two new retained fire crew.

The posts are for those who combine fire service with their normal jobs and agree to be on call for a set number of hours (60 to 120) each week. They will also be required to attend the station each Wednesday evening and take part in additional training.

One essential qualification is your location - you need to live or work within five minutes of the fire station on Green Lane West.

Garstang’s current retained fire staff come from a variety of jobs - they number an ambulance technician, a farmer, a welder, a painter and decorator and staff from Collinson’s and Wallings Ice Cream.

Matt Cornwthwaite has been a retired firefighter for two years, combining the role with his work on the family farm at Humblescough Farm, Nateby.

He said: “I grew up as a local lad and I always wanted to be a part of the community and help with as many things as I could. I thrive off the challenge it brings. It’s enjoyable, it’s demanding. It’s a great way of developing ourselves.”

The retained fire staff are proud to contribute to local community projects such as the Britain in Bloom entry and hanging pictures for shows at the Garstang Arts Centre.

Garstang station has 200 call-outs a year which can range from road traffic accidents on the motorway to a recent pet rescue.

Retained fire crew are employed on a 60 hour contract and initially receive a basic salary of some £3,800.
