One local school certainly turned back the clock to celebrate a very special milestone with a Victorian sports day and tea .

Calder Vale St John’s CE Primary School, in Eidsforth Lane, marked its 150th anniversary with a series of events, which also included open days, a hog roast with stalls, a disco, maypole dancing and a church service.

Those enjoying the Victorian tea were serenaded by the Calder Vale school orchestra.

The school is sited on a hill above the village surrounded by hills and moorland.

Headteacher Holly Huset said: “We have heard from more former pupils, staff and other people connected to the school and our timeline is growing with pictures and memories.”

The Courier’s recent story asking for information about a mystery badge connected with the school has also produced “good intelligence”.

The head explained that the badge was identified by a visitor to the school.

“It was the badge on the school’s football team kit in 1936.

“There was no school uniform at that time, so the badge was on the football kit.

“We now have a photograph of the team and you can see the badge on one player.

“We’ve looked at other photos and can’t see it, so it probably disappeared during the war years,” she said.

“We’ve brought the badge back to life by having it as part of the mosaic we are creating and a banner we are making.”

Visitors were able to join in making a commemorative mosaic, which will be permanently displayed at the school.

An open invitation was issued to past pupils, parents, teachers and staff to join the celebrations.

The head added: “ We had about 195 people through on the day of the hog roast. The oldest former pupil was 90-year-old Mrs Joyce Stoffort (maiden name Joyce Dagger).

Also present were previous head Mrs Elizabeth Heritage and the next head, Mrs Helen Hesketh, who will take over leadership of the school in August.
