GARSTANG’S fame as a British and European floral town winner has now gone global after a win in this weekend’s international floral challenge award, announced in Quebec, Canada, on Saturday.
Bloom leader Norah Hoyles and seven of her team were in Quebec for the awards, while the “home” bloomers gathered at the Wheatsheaf on Saturday evening to await Mrs Hoyles’ mobile phone call from the award ceremony.
The judges were particularly impressed with community and youth involvement in Garstang’s bloom efforts.
Bloom press officer Coun Lynn Harter said: “We are absolutely delighted - we have a hat trick this year with Britain in Bloom, North West in Bloom and now this.”
In Quebec, Garstang scored the top five bloom/stars with the overall small community winner being Tallanstown, Ireland.
* St Michael’s-on-Wyre has won a gold in the North West in Bloom awards, with an environmental award going to the village school.
