Glider crash - two airlifted to hospital

The man and woman, both in their fifties, were airlifted to hospital in separate air ambulances following the incident near Chipping around lunchtime on Sunday. Their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

It is believed the glider had been taking off near to Fiddler’s Lane when it suddenly nosedived into the ground from around 30-feet.

Both occupants were trapped in the badly damaged cockpit, but were concious. Fire crews raced to the scene to free them using hydraulic cutting gear.

A police spokesman said: “It would appear the glider was taking off and it just nosedived straight down.

“The two people were trapped in the aircraft - which suffered severe front end damage - and had to be extracted by firefighters. They were both put on spinal boards and taken off to hospital.

“Two separate air ambulances attended the scene. We have since heard that they are not seriously hurt, fortunately just bumps and bruises.”
