She is a legend in the Legion, the toast of the WRVS and a veteran charity worker.

Garstang resident Mrs Laura Nixon has the power of persuasion – and it’s been recognised with a national award.

The town’s branch of the Royal British Legion Women’s
Section won an award for the most increased membership after Laura led a successful
recruitment drive, nearly
doubling numbers from 38 to 74. In addition, the branch raised more than£1,000 for Legion funds.

The national award saw Garstang competing for the trophy with branches from across the UK.

Laura said much of the
recruitment had taken place at the branch’s annual fund-raising coffee morning.

She stressed that becoming
a member costs just £6.10 a year and this helps pays for immensely valuable work which benefits the families of forces’ veterans. She said: “The women’s section is not a support group for the
British Legion – we are our own organisation. We are women working for women. I like to say it’s girl power!”

To join the Garstang branch contact Laura on 01995 604891 or write to her at 20 Hazelhurst Drive, Garstang, PR3 1WB.

Laura has recently
retired after 22 years
volunteer work with the WRVS, with whom she was the luncheon club organiser and cook.
