The company has undertaken general repair and maintenance for large organisations including insurance companies, surveyors, superstores. the Royal Bank of Scotland and the Ministry of Defence.

One of their most recent projects was an estate off Parkside Lane, Garstang.

Mr Adamson, 65, who describes himself as "partially-retired" said that he was "quite tickled" to win the honour.

"I am very pleased, it is a very nice gesture," he said.

Mr Adamson said he first heard about being nominated some time ago, though it was only last week the honour was confirmed.

He was unaware which organisation nominated him, but thought it was likely the National Federation of Builders.

In November 2008 Mr Adamson was appointed executive chairman of the Construction Confederation.

Lancashire's chief fire officer, Mr Peter Holland, was awarded the CBE.

Mr Holland said: "It is of great personal satisfaction to be granted a CBE, but it is the outstanding achievements of my service working very much as a team that should be rightly celebrated.

"This is the very basis of our role as a Fire and Rescue Service and reflects incredibly well upon every single member of my staff across Lancashire from Silverdale to Skelmersdale and Blackpool to Barnoldswick."
