Milestone celebration for children’s festival

THE Churchtown and District Whitsuntide Children’s Festival is celebrating its 175th anniversary in 2012.

Recent research dates the festival’s origins back to an Oddfellow’s Festival held in 1837, the year of Queen Victoria’s Coronation.

The 2012 Festival will be held on Saturday, June 2, with a procession starting from Kirkland Memorial Hall, Churchtown at 1pm.

Festival organisers will be hosting a special range of celebrations to mark this anniversary, and the festival committee is asking Courier readers to delve into their attics, dust off their photo albums, video tapes, cine films, stories and memories of the Churchtown Festival.

A display will be created on the day featuring the best photos and stories from any submissions they receive.

Organisers would also very much appreciate it if any photos, anecdotes or film submitted could also be part of a new website they are developing to celebrate the anniversary.

Other events planned for the Whitsuntide Children’s Festival include a special period fancy-dress category, and organisers would like to invite former festival queens to join the procession as dignitaries of the event.
