Whitechapel Village Hall will open its doors to the public this Sunday (September 15), from 11am-2pm after eight months of refurbishment, which is still on-going.
Work to date has included making the premises more thermally efficient, including new flooring, extra storage, decorating and a toilet upgrade to the bottom hall.
Phase II of work to the top hall is nearly finished and it is planned to begin work on the final phase soon, when, subject to funds being available, the plan is to refurbish the ladies, gents and disabled toilets, provide wall and floor finishes to the entrance and a bar facelift.
Hall funds are now at an all-time low and achievements to date would not have been possible without a £40,000 grant from Lancashire Environmental Fund and support from the trustees. Applications are being made for smaller grants, but match funding has to be demonstrated.
The hall has also been awarded a Lottery grant of £10,000 specifically for new chairs and tables.
It is now hoped to £25,000 to cover phase III.
