Oscar ready for Arizona kick-off
A Churchtown sports student is heading off to Phoenix, Arizona, in hopes of netting a scholarship at one of the USA’s top universities.
Oscar Pantepino is chasing his dream of becoming a professional player –and he’s hoping it could come true after his visit to the States.
One of Garstang FC’s up and coming young players, Oscar is studying at Preston College Football Sport Performance and Excellence.
He also plays centre forward for the College Football Academy team.
The academy team has been invited to compete in a prestigious football competition featuring some of the best college teams in the USA and Mexico, which is taking place in Phoenix, Arizona this month.
Before he flew off last Wednesday, Oscar said he was looking forward to the big adventure.
“There will be scouts there from universities across the USA,” he said.
“This tournament takes place every year, and people have been offered football scholarships in U.S universities after playing in the tournament.
“I’d love to study in America, and perhaps even play professionally over there.”
Oscar celebrated his 19th birthday in San Diego on Sunday, on a three-day stop-off before the team headed to Phoenix for the fortnight-long tournament which features university teams from all over the USA.
In Phoenix, he is staying with the families of American students who are playing in the tournament.
The cost of the trip tops £1,000, and Oscar is looking for local sponsors to help support him.
Garstang FC have put his plea on the website, and there is still time to sponsor him. To find out more, contact Oscar’s mum, Sheenagh, on [email protected]
