Nominations close at noon on Friday for the Wyreside by–election prompted by the death of County Coun Bob Mutch (Conservative) of Knott End.

The by-election, which will be held on Thursday, October 27, is for the Wyreside division of the county, which covers the rural Wyre wards of Preesall, Pilling, Great Eccleston, and Hambleton and Stalmine with Staynall.

The election looks likely to be a four-cornered contest with Conservative, Greens, Labour and the United Kingdom Independence Party all planning to field candidates. Declared so far are Sue White (Green), Kevin Higginson (Labour) and Simon Noble (UKIP). The Conservatives are understood to be choosing their candidate tomorrow, from a list of three applicants.

At the last election, the seat was won by Coun Mutch, with 3,582 votes and a majority of 2,435.
