Watch manager David Shaw was commenting after a blaze at a detached garage on Grimshaw Street, in the city centre, this evening.

Two fire engines were called out to the blaze at 7.25pm but one engine had to remain on site until utility representatives arrived because of live electrical equipment in the shed.

Tactical ventilation equipment was needed while dealing with the blaze, due to thick smoke.

Watch manager Shaw said: “We believe it was started deliberately.

“What I would say is that while we were out tackling this incident, someone else could have been in genuine need of a fire engine and this sort of thing pulls us away.

“It is putting lives at risk.”

Police have been informed of the incident.
