Town council voices opinion on homes plans

A local man’s bid to extend the time travelling show people can stay on his land has been given the cold shoulder by Garstang Town Council.

The council has also objected to alternative proposals by Stan Cubbins to build up to 75 new homes on the site called Utopia off Kepple Lane.

The plans for both proposals are currently awaiting consideration by Wyre Council. But Garstang Town Council met on Monday to decide its opinion on them.

Councillors were united against the proposals. Couns Lynn and Gordon Harter spoke out in their capacity as local residents, but left the meeting while the Town Council decided its stance.

The council decided to oppose the application to continue to use the Utopia site as accommodation for travelling showpeople until 2017 as this flouted the original limits set by planning inspectors that permission for such accommodation was temporary and should last only until 2014.

Regarding the application for housing, the council said it objected because of concerns about impacts on flooding in the area, highway safety, parking and amenity issues. Coun Harter suggested if development was approved, part of the site should be used for extra health centre parking to relieve current problems.
