GARSTANG’S campaigning councillor Lady Dulcie Atkins has taken over the town’s mayoral chains again.

Coun Lady Atkins, who served as mayor in 2001/2, began her second term of office as Garstang’s first citizen at the annual mayor-making ceremony at the old council offices on Thursday.

After taking over the civic chain from outgoing mayor Coun Gillian Lamb, Coun Lady Atkins said she was looking forward to her mayoral year.

Among her priorities will be setting up a committee to decide how Garstang will celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next year.

She will also be looking at ways of encouraging more people to join Garstang’s voluntary and community organisations. She said: “Ten years after being mayor the first time I am looking forward to taking on the role again. It is a great privilege to do it.”

Coun Lady Atkins is married to Sir Robert Atkins, a Conservative Member of the European Parliament for the North West of England, who will be her consort for the mayoral year.

The couple live on Lancaster Road, Garstang.

She works as personal assistant to her husband and has two children and two grandchildren.

Coun Lady Atkins has been a town and borough councillor since 1999.

Deputy mayor of Garstang for the new civic year is Coun Sandra Perkins.

l Coun Vivien Taylor was elected mayor of Preesall on Monday evening. Her deputy is Coun Chris Lamb.
