The M65 was closed for several hours after a lorry crashed into the central reservation this afternoon.

Both carriageways are now open, but one lane on either side will remain closed until 6am on Sunday for works on the central reservation between junctions 5 and 6 at Blackburn.

It is believed that the lorry smashed through the barrier and ended up on the other side of the motorway.

North West Motorway Police tweeted: "There several points where the central barrier has been damaged covering a 2km distance, this requires a large number of cones which Highways England contractors are bringing to scene."

Crash investigators have been on the scene.
