Tributes pour in to Radio Lancashire reporter Steve

Tributes have been pouring in to the well-loved journalist who died suddenly as he drove to work.

BBC Radio Lancashire journalist Steve Becker was just 56 years old when he collpased at the wheel of his car on Wednesday morning.

He had been on his way to cover the final day of the public inquiry into fracking in Lancashire.

His death and shocked and saddened his thousands of fans. Evening Post reader Sharon Dunkerley said: “This fantastic gentleman interviewed me and my now husband at the top of the Tower four years ago – he put us so at ease, fantastic way he had with people.”

Cath Rowe added: “I am so sad to hear of his untimely death. What a shock for his family, friends and all his radio family. I really enjoyed his broadcasts. He was much loved and will be sadly missed.”

Stephen ‘Tanky’ Allen said: “Deepest condolences to all at Radio Lancashire and Steve’s family – a great broadcaster, he will be sadly missed.”

Kerry Ann Nightingale added: “Such sad news. Such a lovely man.”

Steve, who lived in Chorley, had been a familiar voice on Radio Lancashire for many years, and in recent years had been particularly involved in the controversial issue of fracking in Lancashire.

Aziz Rashid, the head of regional and local programming for the BBC in the North West, said: “Steve worked for the BBC for more than 30 years and has friends and former colleagues right across the organisation. He will be much missed by so many people but especially the team at Radio Lancashire, where he was such a vital part of the newsroom.

“There are difficult days ahead for Steve’s family and they will be supported through them by the BBC.”
