Steven Woolfe said his building shook as a blast hit Maelbeek metro station, which was 50m from his flat.

He told a national radio station he had been talking to his wife about what had already happened at Zaventem airport in Brussels when the incident happened.

He said: “The next thing I heard was a very loud bang that everyone said was like a car exhaust going off.

“The building shook. I instantly thought oh no.”

Mr Woolfe said a “huge number” of police officers arrived and the main road to the metro station was blocked off by police and ambulances.

Also close to the metro station was Sajjad Karim, who lives in the Ribble Valley.

He was leaving his flat in the Belgian city when he saw police and ambulances rush towards the station.

It was reported that he did not see what happened, but saw hundreds of people leaving the station afterwards.

At least 34 people were killed and 170 injured after co-ordinated bomb attacks on the main airport and the Metro system brought terror to Brussels.
