Work has started on refurbishing the several rooms, the kitchen area and the second floor spaces after the club was awarded a grant of £54,000 for the facelift.

Lancashire County Council’s district team leader for Young People in the Ribble Valley, Tim Blezard, told the News: “This is good news for us and for our young people in Longridge who regularly come to the centre.

“The building has not had any work done on it for many, many years and our main job is to smarten and update the interior.

“Old paint and rust stains will be removed, walls scraped, painted and redecorated, the kitchen will be re-ordered and a room for one-to-one meetings will be made available in what was the front office.”

It was also hoped to create a music room on the first floor, a spacious area where the dance groups rehearsed and meetings could be held.

A notice on the centre’s door states the building - once the town’s fire station - will be closed until April.

However, Mr Blezard felt the work could be finished before then and possibly by March. “Longridge young people will be glad to get back,” he said. “We are getting 40 to 50 in a night on the three nights we open, and we are also a school drop-in centre for local pupils.” A special opening is planned after the refurbishment for visitors to view the new interior.
