TWO men, 2000 miles, two weeks and ..... a mototaxi.

No this is not Ewan McGregor’s and Charley Boorman’s next installment to the ‘Long Way Down’ but the epic adventure soon to be undertaken by local lads and good friends Dave Edwards and Alan Hempton.

The daring duo are set to drive across Peru on a trip they will never forget, through the desert to the depths of the Amazon jungle, with the small matter of the Andes in between.

They will complete the charity trip aboard a modified 125cc motorbike, with a “sofa” on the back, travelling more than 100 miles a day at speeds no faster than can be walked.

Equipped with their ‘Spanglish,’ camping gear and their ‘how to guide’ on fixing a mototaxi, the pair will fly out to South America for the start of the trip on September 3.

Dave, 27, from Hambleton said: “There is no real route, no back-up, if the bike breaks down we have to fix it.

“The idea is to take two weeks but it doesn’t do very well uphill so it could take two months!

“It’s just us, the worst vehicle ever invented and thousands of miles of desert and mountains but it will be an adventure.”

The pair, both keen travellers, decided to take on the Mototaxi junket whilst on another expedition in India last year.

Having funded the entire trip themselves, they are now working on raising funds for Practical Action and cancer charity Marie Curie, in memory of Alan’s dad Ronnie, who he lost to cancer in 2009.

A charity BBQ has already raised over £200 and on August 18 they will host a Race Night at the Th’Owd Tithebarn from 8pm, with stand-up bingo and a raffle.

Restaurant manager Alan, 27, said: “It seemed a really good idea, we wanted a challenge but there’s been a lot more planning involved than we first thought.

“The challenges for us on the trip are things like sorting out the bike when it breaks down, which will probably be a lot, then it will be can we fix it and if not?

“We hope to find a village to bed down but we’ll be geared up with a tent just in case. People think we are mad.”

Dave added: “They are quite supportive of what we are doing though and a few of the local businesses have been great with sponsoring us.

“Everyone is welcome to the race night so come along and join us.”
